Today, URA convened a timely and forward-looking Research Policy Forum on The Role of Philanthropic Investment in University Research, bringing together leaders from universities, foundations, and the research enterprise to explore how philanthropy can help strengthen discovery, innovation, and long-term scientific capacity.
The forum discussion highlighted a growing reality: collaborations between academia and philanthropy are increasingly important for advancing high-impact research, supporting talent, and accelerating the translation of discoveries into societal benefit. The forum also addressed flexible funding and indirect cost models, research translation, storytelling, shared venues for strategic coherence, and the growing need for data and evidence frameworks to understand the philanthropic research landscape better.
Special thanks to the outstanding speakers and panelists for their insightful contributions: Eric Isaacs (Research Corporation for Science Advancement), Luiza Newlin-Lukowicz (The Ohio State University), Gregory Gabadadze (New York University and Simons Foundation), Michelle Govani and Lara Ferry (Arizona State University), Gabriele Betancourt-Martínez (Heising-Simons Foundation), Maha Krishnamurthy (University of Tennessee Research Foundation), and France Córdova and Kate Lowry (Science Philanthropy Alliance).
