Session Title: Quantum Computing & Energy Technology Research with National Lab Research SLAM Participants

Session Description:  The Universities Research Association National Labs Seminar Series will feature National Lab Research SLAM Participants, Dr. Yashwanth Balaji from Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s Molecular Foundry, and Dr. Nicholas Cross from Lawrence Livermore National Lab.

REGISTRATION required

Speaker Bios:

Yashwanth graduated in Electronics and Instrumentation from Madras Institute of Technology, India and earned a Master’s in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from KU Leuven in 2015. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from KU Leuven and IMEC, Belgium, in 2020, where his doctoral research centered on the fabrication and electrical characterization of transistors based on 2D materials for next-generation electronic applications. After completing his Ph.D., Yashwanth joined Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) in the UK as a Nanofabrication Engineer, where he led the delivery of superconducting quantum processing units. He subsequently moved to the Molecular Foundry Nanofabrication Facility as a Postdoctoral Researcher and later as a Staff Scientist, where his work focuses on material and device optimization for superconducting quantum circuits.

Nicholas is a chemical engineer with degrees from Oregon State University and Penn State University. In his time at OSU, he researched methods for reducing cost of large-scale energy storage and increasing performance of solar-powered electric vehicles. At PSU, he characterized and developed a technology that converts low temperature heat into electrical power via copper-ligand electrochemistry and thermal distillation. Currently, he is a research staff member at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he works on technologies including next-generation lithium batteries, carbon capture and conversion, and rare earth element extraction and purification.

In this panel discussion moderated by Adriana Bankston, Universities Research Association, participants will discuss their work at LBNL & LLNL, in addition to training opportunities.
